EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an effective, evidence based treatment for trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
EMDR utilizes alternating tones, vibrations, or eye movements to create a bilateral stimulation. This back-and-forth process mimics rapid eye movement (REM), a phase of sleep during which the brain processes and stores memories. The bilateral dynamic of EMDR creates a mental state which can more readily access and effectively process difficult feelings and memories. EMDR can lead to significant emotional healing and improved quality of life for many individuals.
EMDR can alleviate symptoms such as:
- Intrusive memories or nightmares
- Avoidance of trauma-related triggers (people, places, or situations)
- Negative beliefs about oneself, others, or the world
- Extreme or numb emotional experiences
What to expect?
- EMDR is experienced in the context of a supportive, therapeutic relationship and environment.
- Therapist and Client work together to develop trauma informed coping skills as preparation for EMDR.
- EMDR is experiential; it activates feelings, thoughts, images, memories, and physical sensations related to the trauma. This distress is desensitized and reprocessed, resulting in a healing experience.
- Clients commonly experience a release of emotional pain followed by feelings of relief, acceptance, and closure. In this adaptive shift, new beliefs or insights emerge.
- These new perspectives set the stage for adaptive behaviors and improved wellbeing.
EMDR is a powerful tool for change!
